Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation. It tackles climate change, helps to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and boosts the EU’s competitiveness and growth. The programme facilitates collaboration and strengthens the impact of research and innovation in developing, supporting and implementing EU policies while tackling global challenges. It supports the creation and better diffusion of excellent knowledge and technologies. It creates jobs, fully engages the EU’s talent pool, boosts economic growth, promotes industrial competitiveness and optimises investment impact within a strengthened European Research Area. Our cities are involved in the following Horizon Europe projects.

Making City - Groningen

Coordinated by the CARTIF Foundation, MAKING-CITY is a 60-month Horizon 2020 project launched in December 2018. It aims to address and demonstrate the urban energy system transformation towards smart and low-carbon cities, based on the Positive Energy District (PED) concept.

SMARTEES - Groningen

SMARTEES – Social Innovation Modelling Approaches to Realizing Transition to Energy Efficiency and Sustainability – is a transdisciplinary research project which aims to support the energy transition and improve policy design by developing alternative and robust policy pathways that foster citizen inclusion and take local peculiarities into account.

Food Trails - Groningen

Food Trails is a four year project (2020-2024). It aims to translate the worldwide Milan Urban Food Policy Pact’s shared vision and collective commitment to integrated urban food policies into measurable and long-term progress towards sustainable food systems in Europe.

ULaaDS - Groningen

Urban Logistics as an On-Demand Service focuses on fostering sustainable and liveable cities through the deployment of innovative, shared, zero-emission logistics, while dealing with the impact of the on-demand economy.

HEAVENN - Emmen

HEAVENN comprises a wide range of projects with related and supporting complementary studies. Experience and best practices resulting from HEAVENN will be gathered and tested, and translated into a means of demonstrating the replicability of this concept in Europe and beyond.

PATH2LC - Leeuwarden

In the PATH2LC project public authorities are working together within the framework of a holistic network approach (so called learning municipality networks) with the aim to achieve low-carbon municipalities.

EU City Facility - Leeuwarden

The Municipality of Leeuwarden uses EUCF subsidies to develop a full-fledged business and financial plan to solve a problem in Business park de Zwette, so that locally generated green energy can be stored and shared, for instance through the use of batteries.

Be.CULTOUR - Leeuwarden

The overarching objective of the Be.CULTOUR project is the co-creation and testing of sustainable innovations for circular cultural tourism. This happens through the creation of networks and improved investing strategies.
